Since February 2017, the GSE has published the rules for the maintenance and technological modernisation of the plants, effectively opening up possible optimisation actions (revamping and repowering) of the incentivised photovoltaic plants. This regulation is a necessary condition, but insufficient to start a modernisation and optimisation process.

Inefficiencies are connected to different problems: from technological problems to management, organisational and maintenance problems. The resolution of these problems can therefore suffer from inertia related to management balances established between the various operators involved (Asset Managers, Maintenance technicians, Installers, etc ...).

  • Request an extra budget regarding the already contracted maintenance values
  • Unavailability of adequate control systems or lack of comprehensive data to support the analysis
  • Avoid situations that could undermine the relationship of trust already acquired between the customer and the maintenance technician

Performance Ratio is one of the main performance parameters (KPI) identified to perform the function of measuring the efficiency of a photovoltaic system.

The performance of a plant is influenced by multiple variables, some of which are directly linked to the quality and construction characteristics of the plant and others to the meteorological conditions, especially to the quantity of primary (solar) energy affecting the plan of the modules.

The Performance Ratio (also defined in the CEI 82-25 NORM) defines the relationship between the energy efficiency measured by the plant and the possible theoretical efficiency. This value is not influenced by the direction of the plant and irradiation it is subjected to. For this reason, due to the Performance Ratio, it is possible to compare photovoltaic systems connected to the grid and located in different parts of the world.

These variables, although simply identified, make measuring the performance, and above all, the comparison of systems installed in geographically distributed areas with different construction characteristics rather delicate. This measurement requires the identification of parameters derived from direct measurements detected by the plants that can harmonise the variables independent from the system and combine them into a single authoritative and representative value of the performance.
